What Are Hindu Mantras?
Hindu mantras are sacred Sanskrit syllables, words, or phrases that carry specific vibrational frequencies designed to affect the mind, body, and spirit of the practitioner. The word Mantra comes from the Sanskrit roots: manas (mind) + tra (tool/instrument) — literally meaning "an instrument of the mind" or "a tool that liberates the mind."
Mantras have been used in Hindu spiritual practice for over 3,500 years, first appearing in the Rig Veda — one of the oldest religious texts in human history. They form the foundation of Vedic ritual, yoga practice, and daily spiritual devotion (Bhakti).
