What is Japa?

Japa is the practice of repeating a mantra — a sacred name or phrase — again and again, with love and attention. It is one of the simplest and oldest forms of meditation in the Hindu tradition. You do not need anything special: just a quiet mind and a mantra dear to you.

Why 108 beads?

A traditional japa mala (prayer garland) has 108 beads. The number 108 is considered sacred in Indian tradition — it appears in astronomy, in the Upanishads (there are 108 principal Upanishads), and in the names of the divine (many deities have 108 names). Completing one round of 108 repetitions is called one mala.

The 109th bead, called the meru (or guru bead), sits at the top of the garland. It is never counted or crossed — it marks where a round begins and ends, reminding us to pause and turn back with reverence.

How to use this counter

• Go to the 📿 Counter tab.
• Choose your mantra from the list (or type your own with "Custom").
• Say the mantra once — silently or aloud — then tap the large area at the bottom. On a computer you can also press Spacebar or Enter.
• One bead on the circle fills with each repetition. The golden bead at the top is the meru.
• When you reach 108, a gentle chime and vibration (if enabled) mark one completed mala, and the circle begins again.
• Set a daily goal (for example 1, 3 or 11 malas) and watch your progress bar fill.
• Tapped by mistake? Use Undo.
