Why Does Lord Shani Never Trouble Devotees of Hanuman? The Sacred Legend & Remedies
In Vedic astrology and Sanatana Dharma, Lord Shani (Saturn) is known as Nyayadhikari—the supreme cosmic judge who rewards or chastises souls strictly based on their karma. While the transit of Shani Sade Sati or Dhaiya often strikes fear into mortals, there is one divine sanctuary where Shani's severity turns into benevolent protection: the shelter of Bhagwan Shri Hanuman.

According to the sacred puranas, the demon king Ravana conquered all three worlds and captured the Navagrahas (nine celestial deities), placing them face-down under the steps of his throne to humiliate them. Lord Shani was chained in the darkest dungeon of Lanka.
When Shri Hanuman entered Lanka as Lord Rama's messenger and ignited the demon fortress during Lanka Dahan, He heard cries echoing from the subterranean prison. Recognizing the radiant son of Surya, Hanuman shattered Shani Dev's iron chains with His thunderous mace (Gada).
Overjoyed with gratitude, Shani Dev looked upon Maruti and declared:
"O Mahavira! You have liberated Me from humiliation and bondage. Ask of Me any boon, and it shall be granted immediately."
Hanuman, who desired nothing for Himself, asked only one favor for His beloved devotees:
"O Shani Dev! Promise Me that whoever worships Bhagwan Shri Rama and recites My sacred hymns with devotion shall never suffer the harsh afflictions of your transit. May your gaze bring them spiritual awakening rather than devastation."
Shani Dev gladly sealed this divine boon with His solemn oath.
The Humbled Gaze: Why Mustard Oil is Offered to Shani Dev
In another ancient narrative, Shani Dev once approached Hanuman while the great monkey god was absorbed in meditating on Lord Rama. Shani insisted that everyone must come under his gravitational cycle. In response, Hanuman expanded His cosmic tail, coiling Shani tightly around mountains and boulders until Shani cried out for mercy.
To soothe Shani Dev's battered body, Hanuman applied cooling mustard oil (sarson tel). Ever since, offering mustard oil on Saturdays symbolizes the soothing of karmic friction and honoring the eternal bond of humility between Shani Dev and Hanuman.
